Are you trying to decide which coffee maker would be the best one for you to take along to college?  For most students, a coffee maker is a must have!  A hot cup of joe is essential for all of those late night study sessions and for that quick pick me up in the mornings.

With all of the units that there are to choose from, you will want to look for one that has these features that are great for dorm life:

  • Easy to use
  • Easy to clean
  • Doesn’t have too big of a footprint
  • Brews a fresh cup for your friends
  • Makes the kind of beverages that you want
  • Gets you through the years that you will be in college

Before you buy a coffee maker for your dorm room, you should ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you drink a lot of brew or not much at all?  If you drink a lot of brew, you might want to look for an automatic drip unit but if you drink very little, you might want to check out the single-serve units.
  • Are you okay with brewing a pot and drinking it or do you like a fresh cup every time?  If you have to have a fresh cup every time, then a single-serve unit would be what you should look for.
  • Do you like different flavors of coffee?  If so, a single cup coffee maker might be best for you.
  • Will your friends be over a lot and do they drink coffee?  Supplying coffee for your friends could become a little expensive if you have a single serve machine whereas an automatic drip unit wouldn’t be expensive to make brew for everyone.
  • How much space in your dorm room do you have for a coffee maker?  Will you have to store the unit or can it stay on the counter top.  Will your rommate be bringing one?

We have picked a few coffee makers that we think would be the best ones for a dorm room.

Keurig K10 MINI Plus Brewing System

This is a great unit for the dorm room.  It’s easy to use, easy to clean, and doesn’t require a lot of maintenance.  It uses K-cups so you have lots of flavors to choose from or you can use your own coffee grounds with a My K-cup.  It also has the option of making a 6, 8, or 10 ounce cup of brew.  It is a single serve unit, so it makes a fresh cup of joe each time.  You don’t have to mess with grinds as the coffee is already pre-measured and packaged in a K-cup.  Not only can you brew coffee with this unit but you can also make hot chocolate, different flavors of tea, lemonade, and iced coffees.  There are so many different K-cups to choose from that you can virtually pick whatever you want!

It comes in several different colors:  black, white, blue, red, green, pink and platinum.  You can also spruce your Keurig MINI up with a college decal!  Some of the decals include:  UCLA Bruins, University of Miami, University of Georgia and University of Texas.  Those are just a few that are offered.   Won’t your little mini Keurig look awesome with your college decal on it!

Hamilton Beach 49999A FlexBrew Single-Serve Coffee Maker

This little machine would be a great machine if you want to use your own grinds, K-cups or soft pods, because you can use all three with this unit.  Using K-cups or soft pods make the machine easy to use and easy to clean.  Using grinds, will make the clean up a little bit more complex, but if you want to save money, grinds is the way to go.  This machine also has an adjustable cup rest that will let you brew into standard-size cups or travel mugs.  Another plus to this machine is that it shuts off automatically when the brew cycle is complete, so if you’re late for class, you don’t have to worry about turning it off.

Not a coffee drinker?  No problem!  This nifty little machine will brew a variety of tea pods, including herbal, chai, white, green, black and flavorful blends.  It also has a small footprint so it won’t take up a lot of counter space.  If you have your friends over quite often and they drink lots of brew, you might consider this unit.

Bosch TAS2002UC8 Tassimo T20 Beverage System and Coffee Brewer

This cute little machine makes great coffee beverages, is easy to use and easy to clean!  All you have to do is pop in a T-DISC and the Tassimo T20 will read the barcode and brew the perfect beverage.  The bar code allows the machine to brew each beverage with the exact pressure, temperature, water, and time duration, making every drink perfect!

We had one of these units and I have to say that it made some great beverages that you don’t get with the Keurig.  If you like specialty beverages, this machine brews coffee, cappuccino, latte, espresso, and tea.  The variety of T-DISCS isn’t as large as it is with the K-cups, but they do brew great tasting specialty beverages.

This unit has a removable cup stand so you can brew into a cup or travel mug.  To clean and descale this machine, you just pop in a special T-DISC and it does it for you.  The footprint is small, so it doesn’t take up much room…perfect for a small dorm room!

If you like specialty drinks late at night while you are studying, you can’t go wrong with this machine.

Hamilton Beach 49981A Single Serve Scoop Coffee Maker

This machine uses grinds, brews your beverage quickly, and is easy to use.  It comes with a steel mesh scoop for filtering fresh grinds so all you have to do is 1)  Scoop  2)  Place  3)  Brew.  It’s as simple as that!  It also has an adjustable stand that is built-in to the machine.  The stand flips so you can brew a standard-size cup of joe or a travel mug full of delicious brew.  This unit is slender with a small footprint, so it won’t take up a lot of space in your small dorm room.  It’s an attractive unit and is made out stainless steel with black accents.

It has settings for regular and bold coffee and it shuts off automatically after brewing.  This machine is just like an automatic drip unit, but you can brew one cup at a time instead of a full pot.  If you like automatic drip machines, but don’t like the leftover coffee sitting in the pot, you should check this unit out.  It costs pennies to make your coffee and you can use any kind of grounds that you want.  You can also make any size of cup that you like and you can make it the strength that you want!

Mr. Coffee BVMC-SJX33GT 12-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker

If you are going to have lots of friends over to study and they’ll be drinking a lot of brew, you might want to consider this automatic drip coffee machine.  This unit is a best seller on Amazon and will make 12 cups of brew for you to share with your study buddies!  The filter basket is removable which makes it easy to fill and clean.  It also has a brewing pause ‘n serve that will let you pour a cup of joe while the unit is still brewing.  Another important feature is the cleaning cycle that makes cleaning quick and easy.  And if you are in a hurry to get out the door, you don’t have to worry about turning the unit off because it will shut off automatically.  The footprint isn’t too big, so you don’t have to worry about it taking up a lot of space in your small dorm room.

Cuisinart DGB-625BC Grind-and-Brew 12-Cup Automatic Coffee Maker

This unit has a built-in automatic bean grinder for a fresher cup of joe.  It makes 12 cups at a time and it is fully programmable with an adjustable auto-shutoff.  If you don’t want to grind beans, there is a grind-off option so you can use pre-ground grinds.  This would be the perfect machine if you are making lots of coffee for late night study groups.

You can program this machine to have your coffee ready for you when you wake up in the mornings!  This is a great feature if you are one of those that is always running late.  A con to having one of these in your dorm room is the noise that it makes while grinding the beans.  Grind-and-brew machines are a little on the noisy side so if your roommate doesn’t get up when you do, grinding beans might not be an option.  If that’s the case, you can use pre-ground coffee.  Another con for the dorm room is that it has to be cleaned each time you use it.

All of the above units would make great coffee makers for a dorm room.  You need to decide if you want one that is easy to use and easy to clean or one that will make coffee for you and all of your friends and not cost you an arm and a leg!  If the the first option is what you are looking for then a single serve brew system will work great, but if you are planning on serving all of your friends while you are studying, then an automatic drip machine or a grind-and-brew unit would be best for you!
